Bad Day At WKRN

June 6, 2007 · 14 Comments

I couldn’t let recent events go by and not post a thought or two, especially when the end result is that a friend feels compelled to quit her job.  I have been upfront with her, and with my friends, that I objected to her linking to that poison in the first place.  I will not link to it from here.  I mean, I wouldn’t have linked to it even under the headline:  “Local moron shows his ass.”  I usually disagreed with her efforts to strike balance on NiT, you don’t see Liberal blogs show up on young Mr. Kleinheider’s Volunteer Voters aggregater.  And thats fine.  We all know what Brittney is about, but the topic was a sensitive one, and perhaps could have been handled differently.  We don’t have to agree that it (the link) was a mistake.  What I hope we agree about is that Brittney didn’t deserve the hate-fest that followed.

I really like and admire Aunt B, but I don’t see misogyny here.  Were there misogynistic comments made on various blogs about her?  Sure.  Some idiot called her “Kitten.” At the very least, I’d consider that condescending as all get out.  I think I would be hesitant, though, to imply that she was attacked because she is female.

It was blatantly unprofessional for Jesus General to turn his grief into a campaign to deprive Brittney of her livelihood..  He saw something that wasn’t there, and he was assured by people who know Brittney and read her daily that she made no endorsement of that post.  That should have been sufficient.  Instead, he and his readers unleashed on a person who, for the most part, shares their ideology, and is an important local voice for fairness and equal rights..  I’ve gone back and read all of the comments on NiT, and on TCP, and I have yet to read any diatribes against the pig who wrote the offensive post to begin with.  Seems lazy, and cowardly to me.  Just like him.

This will fuel a bunch of snickering posts about how we Leftists routinely turn on each other, which is laughable, since anytime young Mr. Kleinheider strays an inch or so from the prescribed Conservative path, he is set upon by almost every Right Wing watchdog in the State of Tennessee.

So, a friend is having a bad day, and compounding it by resigning.  Again, I don’t agree with the decision, but I don’t have to live her life, she does.  I hope she quickly finds a new path that will allow her to use her writing skills, and keep her bills paid too.  At least this situation has shown her that she has many friends, and that ain’t a bad thing, huh?

Well said, my friend. Well said.

Your comparisons and contrasts between NIT and VV are dead on.

Well said (P.S. My blog shows up on VV and I’m a liberal hippie.)
Brittney made a decision. Apparently she was done and I get that.
But I think that the people who came out in her defense hopefully will prove to her that we support her, despite what she decides to do.
    She will be missed.

    Aunt B.
    You, yourself

These are just a smattering of the liberal/left-wing blogs on VV’s aggregator.

Applause to you as well as many others today, Mr. Mack.

  • Mr. Mack // June 6, 2007 at 2:49 pm

Well, then, Kat, I stand corrected.

Thank you Mack. This is a bad day for all of us, there’s been more ugliness than any of us should have to see in one day. While I wish Brittney would reconsider, I can understand and empathize with her decision. As I said somewhere else, if I had her job, I’m sure I’d be on Paxil. Low tolerance for stress here.

Off topic, because I have no idea whats going on, but I moved my blog, mostly just because everyone I know uses wordpress. So, this is where you can find me.

    Crap, wordpress hates me.

How the heck did this happen?

I agree with B that there is a serious misogynist undertone to this whole thing, and YOU disagree?

    I’m getting dizzy.

Slarti, I just think it is all rooted in stubborness, and cowardice. I don’t think gender played THAT big a role. A friend of mine disagrees, we’ve talked about it, and though I maintain that it had more to do with anger and frustration than gender hating, I respect her viewpoint.

Are you getting the vapors or something? ;)

  • Aunt B. // June 7, 2007 at 8:51 am

Slarti, as I often am with you, in this case, I’m right. I’m just patient enough to wait for both you and Mack to come around.

Heh. I have to agree with Slarti. (Did I just say that? Is the sky falling?!) It is weird that he sees it and you don’t.

I think part of it is that it’s a structural/contextual thing (I think I just lost Slarti again… but we get to the same place eventually), rather than a conscious, individual choice deal. The misogyny is in the fact that he went after her and not Smantix (even though he offers reason, later… part ), and in the shape of the criticisms offered and the way the threads at Aunt B’s and NiT bloomed in a way Smantix’s didn’t. It’s in the gendered language and the gendered expectations of behavior… in the way that her tone and promptness of response are considered as much a part of her percieved ‘weakness’ as any actual actions on her behalf. In the way that, among the many people who criticisized JG, he went after Aunt B with a vengeance (even though the criticism at Acephalous was even more biting and had much of the same type of complaint). It’s in the shape of the encounter, rather than any specific idea, word, thought, action.
